As technology continues to rapidly progress, K-12 educators and administrators have been integrating Internet and mobile technologies into the academic lives of students across America. In today's era of data analysis and cloud storage, some policymakers are asking whether the laws governing student privacy are keeping up with that rapid technological revolution. Senator Ed Markey, the junior senator from Massachusetts, recently raised concerns with Education Secretary Arne Duncan about student data protection. This panel will ask how legislation, regulation and enforcement best be crafted to allow educators to reap the benefits of cloud computing while also safeguarding important privacy rights associated with the handling of education-related information.
